The Senior Chemist, Technical Lead Hot Cell Operations, is responsible for managing the receipt, archiving and processing of radioactive samples requiring hot cell use, subsampling, and distribution to analytical disciplines; completing applicable analyses, and ensuring that analytical services are provided to customers in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

The Senior Chemist/Technical Lead will also assist in supporting the analytical divisions to focus work teams in the performance of the analytical work scope; in addition to providing technical competency, capability, capacity, and effective resource utilization for quality sample analyses.

In accordance with ISMS and the QAPD, laboratory leadership has ultimate responsibility for providing a safe working environment for their staff and for compliance and quality of products.


Essential Functions

  • Works with the chemists/scientists/ chemical technologists and the Project Management Department to effectively plan, organize, and manage the activities in assigned areas to meet laboratory and client schedules (includes scheduling staff for bench work, data review, etc.).
  • Demonstrate diplomacy in working with others (subordinates, peers, higher management levels) to obtain desired results. Interface with groups within and outside of analytical services, senior management, and auditors.
  • Provide technical guidance within the subject matter area, providing assistance to less experienced scientists, laboratory technicians, and other organizations within the Analytical Laboratory. Initiate programs to improve work processes. Ensure that any identified bottlenecks to analytical production are brought up with the WHL Operations Manager and the Project Management immediately.
  • Function as the technical authority for assigned methods and procedures, including person‑in‑charge functions, and configuration control authority. Ensure compliance of the work area and assigned methods to policy and procedural requirements.
  • Function as the subject-matter expert for all waste streams generated within laboratories for which responsibility is assigned. Ensure that all in process waste is properly labeled and that all chemists/scientists and laboratory technicians within the assigned department operate in compliance with applicable waste segregation procedures and that all waste streams are properly transferred according to procedural requirements.
  • Obtain competency to review analytical data for analyses within the assigned department. Act as back-up for data review within the department to ensure that single points of failure are eliminated.
  • Resolve employee safety concerns before proceeding with tasks. Ensure that all personnel adhere to safety and environmental standards. Address employee concerns as they arise, and encourage employees to utilize established company methods, including the Employee Concerns Program to resolve issues.
  • Reinforce ISMS, VPP, EMS, HPI, and Conduct of Operations processes, values, and behaviors in work performed in the hot cells operation and analytical chemistry groups.

Supervisory Functions

  • Provide leadership and motivation in directing analytical activities
  • Coach and direct the technical activities of the chemical technologists, including training and oversight of analytical activities and production.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related science

Experience working in an accredited laboratory environment

Minimum of 5 years Hot Cells Operation Experience
